Re: Sacramento?
Fri, June 16, 2006 - 1:01 PMWhat a trip... I started a yahoo group called "Sacramento Dive Bar Connoisseurs" and someone sent me link to this forum.
If you love dive bars & live in Sac town... come out on a dive bar thursday!
groups.yahoo.com/group/Sac_DiveBars/
We visit a different Sacramento "dive bar" every other Thursday night 8:00pm. Anyone over 21 is welcome.
Why we love dive bars:
Down to earth atmosphere. No cover or waiting in line. Cheap drinks. Vintage jukeboxes. Bathroom vending machines. Unique clientele. Owner operated. They're pure americana - e.g. Cheers, Moe's from Simpsons, Regal Beagle from Three's Company. Last but not least... they're the best place to meet adventurous locals -
P.S. - Chrismo, wattup!? I see you found this page too....

Sun, July 18, 2004 - 4:54 PMthe flame may be the truest dive in downtown sacramento. if you're that way, check out the monte carlo, also....S & 16th?, i think. -

Re: Sacramento?
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 11:21 PMI have to say nooooooooo to the Monte Carlo. I have had bad experiences with people who frequent there. Well that was many many moons ago but I just don't do that. I can get pretty comfy at the Round Corner or even get rowdy at the Distillery. Bu twhen I can get people to go to The Flam Club I like that too. Well actually when I do the bar thing its usuall begining at the Tavern(Old Tavern or O.T.) and going over to Benneys and then the Flame Club. That is a pretty busy night for me.

Thu, August 25, 2005 - 10:56 PMOh you got to go to the Flame! Of all the dive bars in Sac-toe. The Flame to me is the best. The bartener, Gin is a sweethart, She works on Friday nights and that is when the Flame goes off the hook. It's a freak show and I love it.
I also live right aroud the corner, so I can stumble home.

Fri, August 26, 2005 - 10:34 AMzelda's anyone?
it's so cozy and dark you almost don't notice it's a pizzaria! -

Re: Sacramento?
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 12:38 PMZelda's Pizza -Great pie; worst service anywhere. The staff there pride themselves on being as rude as possible. The motto at Zelda's is consistency: Consistently good food - consistently rude staff.

Fri, August 26, 2005 - 3:26 PMMy last Sacto dive bar expedition was years ago, but I remember this place called "The Post". It was actually a bar upstairs in the Veterans of Foreign Wars club, and the public was welcome. If you wanted to shoot pool with guys with Nam stories, this was THE place to go.

Re: Sacramento?
Tue, August 30, 2005 - 12:33 AMThe best dive bar in Sacramento is the Pine Cove. They used to sell $.65 glasses of Schlitz. And free stale popcorn ! -
-
Re: Sacramento?
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 12:34 PMPine Cove rocks. Upstairs above a liquor store; just across from the business 80 freeway. Many plans have been hatched at the Pine Cove. -

Re: Sacramento?
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 12:41 PMAnother nomination: The Back Door. In the alley behind the Firehouse in Old Town. Absolutely prototypical dive bar. -

Re: Sacramento?
Wed, September 7, 2005 - 12:06 AMno one has mentioned The Old Tavern on 21st @ P? I'm amazed. Happy Hour is between 6:00-11:00AM.

Re: Sacramento?
Thu, September 8, 2005 - 1:28 PMThat place have an outdoor porch that's fenced in with tables? I think I've been there; once. Lawyer lunch turned into, uh, way past dinner bell. . . But any place with a happy hour that ENDS before noon! That rocks. -
-
Re: Sacramento?
Fri, September 9, 2005 - 5:20 PMYeah, that's the place. Killer jukebox, strong, cheap drinks. Close to home. It's no wonder why it keeps getting voted 'Best Dive Bar' in Sacto.
-
-
Re: Sacramento?
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 7:03 PMThe Old Tavern totally gets my vote for best dive bar o' Sac. The Torch Club, pre 15th Street location, would have gotten an honorable mention but it went all hipster. :(
For gay dive bars, the Mercantile gets an honarary mention.

I am sad to report, that this place is not a dive. No real dive bar charges $3.00 for a bottle of Miller. Hell, I wen down the street to Fanny Anne's and got a pint of Sierra for the same price- and that's before happy hour.

Re: Sacramento?
Fri, September 9, 2005 - 11:11 AMI think of the Pine Cove as more a meat market and less a dive. But it's a divey meat market. -

Re: Sacramento?
Tue, September 13, 2005 - 5:28 AMI have been blind drunk and crawling home from probably every bar in downtown Sacramento. Benny's and Round Corner remain my fave. -

Re: Sacramento?
Sun, January 22, 2006 - 11:46 PMI had a friend get stabbed in front of the Round Corner. Eep. I suppose that gives it even more Dive Bar cred, but it also has scared me off forever.

Re: Sacramento?
Fri, October 28, 2005 - 10:35 PMThe Sacramento Dive Bar Connoisseurs (Yahoo Group: Sac_DiveBars) picked Flame Club about three weeks ago. Not a bad little dive. I think I spotted shuffleboard, a fishing-themed pinball machine, and a funky bathroom... all hallmarks of a good dive! -

Re: Sacramento?
Wed, November 2, 2005 - 8:33 AMYeah, that's a great one. Strong, cheap drinks.

Re: Sacramento?
Wed, January 25, 2006 - 4:58 AMthe Virgin Sturgeon is worth checking out...
...on the river with indoor and outdoor seating and you have to walk down one of those things that connect an airplane to the gate.
the sturgeon is fun.
honorable mention -
-
Re: Sacramento?
Sun, January 29, 2006 - 8:57 PMNo. It does not even get a door prize.
The Virgin Sturgeon is NOT, I repeat, NOT a dive bar. Any place that politicians (including the governator) is NOT a dive bar. Any place that serves food that is priced ABOVE $15.00 is NOT a dive bar.

Dive bar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dive_bar
A dive bar, or simply a dive, is a drinking establishment (or sometimes a restaurant) with a dated or run-down appearance and atmosphere. In a dive bar, the drinks tend to be cheap and of low quality, but frequently are of a high alcohol content.
The term was possibly coined in the 19th century, when often these types of establishments were located below street level, and one was able to dive into it for a quick drink.
People tend to frequent dives for the sole purpose of drinking (or sometimes eating) inexpensively, and sometimes there are frequent patrons who appreciate the laid-back atmosphere. Dive bars often have outdoor commercial signage that appears dated.

Come on dude...the sturg (as a bar not a restaurant) has a run down apearence, cheap drinks (also easy to get free ones), strong drinks, it's actually below street level, and the 'dive' term is in reference to water. Fitting a dive bar in *so* many ways.
Have you ever been there late way after the food is closed...the crowd is a hilarious divey mix.
Try going late when there's no more food, the families are gone, there's no politicians in sight, and tell me it doesn't stink of fishy riverside dive. It's all about the late night charm. -

Thu, February 2, 2006 - 7:15 PM"Come on dude...the sturg (as a bar not a restaurant) has a run down apearence,"
It doesn't have an appearance.... IT'S A BOAT
"cheap drinks (also easy to get free ones), strong drinks, "
If you're idea of "cheap drinks" are $10.00 shots of bourbon, and $6.00 beers.
"it's actually below street level, and the 'dive' term is in reference to water."
IT"S A DAMN BOAT.
More specific, it's a three-star resturant that on any night, you are sure to find various politicians having dinner and/or hammering out various deals.
If you want a place that's below street level, and near the water AND HAS CHEAP DRINKS, keep going down the road, about three miles.
You'll see the place I'm talking about.
Average beer= $3.50. Average well, $4.00
Oh, and they don't take credit cards.
"Have you ever been there late way after the food is closed...the crowd is a hilarious divey mix."
Yeah. It's a hipster seen-and-be-seen place. A complete opposite of what you can expect to see at places like The Old Tavern or The Flame Club.

Thu, February 2, 2006 - 7:22 PMAlso if you think about it, by your particular standards, Hooters could be considered a "dive bar."
