Hi there,
I am going to visit a friend in Florida in June, and we are going to drive down to Miami and stay a couple nights. now my friend has been to Miami a bunch (I haven't), and between what she says and from what I have gathered from browsing around it is a super clubby/party scene. Neither of us are into that AT ALL (waiting in line for HOURS to pay a high cover and listen to horrible dance music??? uhhhhh NO!!!!), but I can't seem to find anything that isn't that...we don't need a club necessarily-just maybe a good dive bar for us to escape the suntanned Botoxed madness that is South Beach. Anyone have any suggestions? or maybe a source for listings (like an SF Weekly or Guardian)?? any good TIKI bars????
THANKS!

Re: Miami
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 3:18 PMIf you go inland some there are probably some pretty sweet/rough dives. Central Florida has dive bars in spades. Hunter S. Thompson even was impressed by the quality of dives in Campaign trail '72... I know Dade county has some great ones because of weird blue laws that are exempted in bars. (combination on/off premise liquor license)
But be careful. Central florida can get rough quickly, and stereotypically speaking, EVERYONE has knives. -

Mon, April 10, 2006 - 4:27 PMhaha thanks but I need something IN Miami since we will be staying there....I've been to some other dives where my friend lives in Melbourne, and I think we'll be hitting Orlando too for a day or so.
I'll be sure to pack my knife! :)

Re: Miami
Fri, April 21, 2006 - 11:06 AMOh Honey, there are dive bars Galore here on SoBe, The most prevelent is Club Duece on 14th street, between Washington and Collins! And there are several pubs also, one is on 16th and Lenox Ave. My very favorite is not on the beach, but it is on the Metrorail Line, it is called Foxes Inn, on US1, heading south, walking in is like stepping back into time. Shag red rugs, black vinyl banquettes, great comfort food and cheap and deep drinks! If you want Tiki Bars, the Keys is your best bet, there is one on the alternate rout out to the keys, off of us1, called the Tiki Bar, they also have Alabama Jacks which is a floating dock . The Carribean club where they filmed the movie with Humphrey Bogart in the 40's (location only).
email me if you want any more places....jacquelinechaiban2000@yahoo.com. I know plenty!
Cheers!!!!!! -

Re: Miami
Sun, May 7, 2006 - 7:14 PMHere are 2 of my favorite dive bars in South Beach. The first is a little on the up-scale of dive bars but if you want true down, dirty and cheap head on up to the Chamber.
Club Deuce
222 14th St.
Miami Beach, FL 33139
Attitude is nonexistent and sipping in bars is a way of life. 'The Deuce,' as it's known by locals, has the honor of being the first liquor license granted in South Beach. Neon-lit and noirishly dark inside, this spot is known for extremely cheap drinks, an excellent jukebox and an eccentric group of regulars. Drag queens, raconteurs and pretty women frequent the Deuce 'round the clock. It's open daily from 8 AM to 5 AM. Perhaps the most interesting time to go to the Deuce is during the wee hours, when club kids come in for a nightcap, and the 98-year-old woman who was a pilot during World War II is sharing some of her best stories. Once the site for several Miami Vice shoots, Deuce is unpretentious and proud of its grittiness. For the perfect contrast between new and retro South Beach, begin or complete your night at the Deuce. -- Lesley Abravanel (Photo: Brett Hufziger)It seems that high attitude, glammed-out bars serving over-priced drinks dot the South Beach landscape. If you're more in the mood for a down-to-earth joint where house and techno do not reign supreme, find the big green awning on 30th Street off Collins Avenue and take the steps down to this classic hotel basement bar.
Chamber Lounge
2940 Collins Ave.
Miami Beach, FL 33140
A mid-beach landmark, makes no attempt to impress, instead it just serves up your standard bar fare in a relaxed atmosphere. The likes of trendy drinks like Sour Apple Martinis and Mandarin Orange Cosmos take a back seat to classics like Screwdrivers and Rum and Coke. In lieu of a DJ, there's the essential "old bar" jukebox featuring everything from favorite oldies to contemporary Top 40 hits.
The place attracts a varied crowd everyday of the week. Some highlights include Monday Night football outings with $2 Buds and free buffet and Friday late night happy hour with 2-for-1 drinks from 2-5AM. ?- Marivi Iglesias (Photo: Brett Hufziger)

Re: Miami
Tue, June 13, 2006 - 3:56 PMOkay so I'm back from Miami, I did go to the Deuce and it was perfect...great assortment of characters and we saw a guy from that show Miami Ink in there too. the jukebox situation sucks though-it's one of those new fancy CD things and you only get TWO plays for $1! great selection though! we also went to ROKBAR (Tommy Lee's place) which is certainly NOT a dive and is trying WAY too hard to be rock and roll BUT the music was great and we pinned ourselves against the bar for 4 straight hours (nowhere to sit unless you reserve a table which I imagine costs $$$$)...crowd was SO boring and uninteresting but unpretensious and we made our own fun! -

Mon, July 24, 2006 - 3:07 PMGREAT!!! When this tribe first started we had people from all over take a camera down to their favorite dive and take pictures. It would be fun to do something like that again.
