May I just say that San Francisco is an endless hotbed of superfabulous amazing dive bars. Just went on a little impromptu tour with my friends this past saturday. I am falling more and more in love with san francisco every day. We hit about 8 bars and they were all truly classic dives. I can't wait to come back and dedicate an entire weekend to exploring more of them.

Re: I heart San Francisco
Mon, March 28, 2005 - 3:38 PMyeah, its a great drinking town. nice that sf is small enough where you can walk or taxi from bar to bar -- i used to live crawling distance from the zeitgeist, and was also a regular at the lower haight dives. great dive bars to be found all over the city though.. -
-
Re: I heart San Francisco
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 8:38 AMlower haight dives...there are some good ones.
the city is where its at. there are so many dives to choose from.

Re: I heart San Francisco
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 1:35 AMIs Zeitgeist really a "dive"? -
-
Re: I heart San Francisco
Sun, May 1, 2005 - 1:34 PMI've struggled with this a bit. It is pretty ratty inside which passes as dive... but the large selection of microbrews tells me otherwise.

Re: I heart San Francisco
Tue, July 12, 2005 - 4:06 PMJust look at the toilets (I won't call them restrooms) and tell me it's not a dive.
eewww.

Wed, April 6, 2005 - 12:53 PMI went to Buddha Bar, Ha Ra, 500 club, zeitgeist, high tide, delirium---- a bunch of others whose names escape me. My fabulous friend Steve lives in the castro and we wandered around his hood for a while. I should be coming back up soona and wanna do a full out dive bar saturday! -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 9:38 PMThe Zeitgeist is not a dive bar. The 500 Club is a passable dive.
The High Tide is definately a dive... the last time I was there it smelled of puke and the restrooms were flooded.
Another authentic dive in the Mission is the Ton-Jo Cocktail Lounge at 20th & Mission. There is no sign to indicate its location. Scummy red carpet with gum stains everwhere. Graffitti on the front door. Even I didn't have the stones to order a draft beer here. -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Mon, September 12, 2005 - 8:23 AMThis is a fabulous group. Has anyone heard of Aunt Charlie's? On Turk and Taylor? Heaven, absolute heaven. I also love it b/c the people are there to interact.
I'm looking forward to checking out Ton Jo, keep the dives coming! -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Thu, September 15, 2005 - 2:42 PMI miss the Buddha :-( It's still there but it's just not the same since they painted over the great dragon and Buddha murals with some lame-ass lesser versions of the same images. And then the drug dealers took over. I also miss the 7-11 Club - many a Friday morning hangover was created and carefully nurtured there. I also miss the Owl Tree when Bobby used to be open more than three times a week and business was better.
Now I live in Richmond, where there are no bars. :-(
Did someone say "dive bar tour of SF?" Pretty please? -

Fri, September 16, 2005 - 11:19 AM"dive bar tour of SF".....
That would be so cool. Like a beer hunt instead of a treasure hunt!
Have you tried the PT (Pt. Richmond) for bars? Or North Berkeley? Or did you mean that you live in the "Richmond District"? -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Fri, September 16, 2005 - 11:32 AMYour friendly neighborhood moderater thinks this sounds like a great idea. My problem is that my weekends are filled for awhile... Love Parade is next weekend, I have a private party to attend the weekend after that and then the SF Decompression is the weekend after that. Suggestions? I suppose I could come up to SF during the week... -

Fri, September 16, 2005 - 11:45 AMThursday night drunk fests are always fun. Make a map with meeting places & times? Sat. nights seem best for this sort of thing also... somewhere in the near future when things calm down..
my 2 cents -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 10:50 AMMy favorite is the dive bar tour of Chinatown: Start with Bruce serving up cocktails at Mr. Bings (smoking allowed!), then sketchy basement bar, Red's, the weird combo of older Asian ladies and old white guys at Bowbow, the laidback scene Li Po with occasional live music, and then ending at my favorite, Buddha Bar, with Mark, the drunkest bartender in SF!!! -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Thu, September 29, 2005 - 10:40 AMI was at Mr. Bing's about a year ago. A couple got in a fight at the bar. She broke a beer bottle over her BF's head and ran out. He was bleeding profusely. He asked Bruce, the unflappable Zen bartender, for the bar towel. The guy wraps the dirty bar towel around his head and orders another drink. Bruce doesn't even give the guy a second look as he pours another cocktail.
I feel in love with the Mr. Bing's right then! -

Thu, September 29, 2005 - 11:11 AMGo up the hill, to The Saloon on upper Grant.............. -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Thu, September 29, 2005 - 11:28 AMLove the Saloon. The oldest continually operating blues club west of the Mississippi.
The bartenders and bathrooms look like they have been there since day one. -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Thu, September 29, 2005 - 11:38 AMYou are right.
I have seen many a great musician stop bye to play a set or two.
Ya, do not go into the bathroom's.
I wonder if they have the oldest indoor plumbing west of the Mississippi.......................

Re: I heart San Francisco
Sun, January 8, 2006 - 2:22 AMI believe they said "Richmond", not "the Richmond."
There is confusion everytime I tell people I live in the Richmond...I hear gasps of shock and horror. Then I quickly reassure, "no, no, THE Richmond DISTRICT in SF!"

Re: I heart San Francisco
Tue, June 6, 2006 - 6:19 PMI actually just wrote up a little piece yesterday on how much I love Aunt Charlie's too. It's on one of the main SF blogs here, should anyone be that curious:
sf.metblogs.com/archives/2...nge_1.phtml
On a further dive bar note: Is the Ton-Jo still around? I walked by 20th & Mission looking for it. I didn't have the exact street number so I just looked for the standard 'scary divey'establishment. There looked like a shuttered one (which I'm guessing was it - the storefront looked familiar actually) but nothing else in the area. I will be seriously bummed if I missed this one.

Re: I heart San Francisco
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 11:21 PMYeah, I've owned a business at the corner of 20th and Mission for 5 years, and I still haven't ordered a beer at the Ton-Jo. Those are some grizzly characters! Looks like a Tom Waits album cover.
I used to go to McCarthy's to read. I can see why they sold it, cause I was often the only person in there. -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 1:58 AMDoc's Clock on Mission, and Treat Street. There's a couple of dives on Bush around Taylor and Mason, the Asian girls serve food, and you might be able to smoke if you know how to ask for an ashtray.
Oh so many dives.. so little time...

Sat, November 5, 2005 - 1:51 PMDoes anyone remember McCarthy's on Mission? I don't know if it qualifies as a dive since it was so bright in there. Back in the day, we called it "the Beer Cafeteria". Man, I miss that place. . . Now it's cha cha cha. Yuck yuck yuck. -
-
Re: I heart San Francisco
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 10:54 PMActually isn't it called "McCarthy's Cha Cha Cha"? yeah that place ruled! -

Sun, November 6, 2005 - 9:02 AMDon't rember that one.
Does anyone remember The Chi Chi Club, on Broadway?

Re: I heart San Francisco

Re: I heart San Francisco
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 7:25 PMI used to live in a flat at corner of Mission and 20th in '96.
Yeah McCarthy's was a pretty sleazy place back then. Smoking was still allowed in bars at the time.
Sometimes, hookers from Capp Street would meander in there. With the bright lights and all, one could see the track marks on their legs and arms...Eeeessshhhh -
-
Re: I heart San Francisco
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 3:37 PMNear the end of mccarthy's lengthy occupation, I was sitting in my usual spot, across from Tommy--the 87 year old bartender--looking at the melanoma on his lip, drinking a $1.50 budwiser, and listening to my friend play some old time music in the corner. Right then, a drunk patron, who was angry when Tommy refused to serve him, got in his late-model, white Buick, and tried to drive it through the front of the bar!!! It wasn't long after that, that the Beer Cafeteria fell to the same demise as most other bars in SF. I want a beer. . . -

Re: I heart San Francisco
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 4:05 PMAnother place I really miss is LaRocca's corner In North Beach...it's still there, but it has new owners and has since turned into a fucking Sports Bar! grrr....I used to love going in there Pre and Post Bimbo's shows...they had a killer jukebox playing only 40's and 50's music, tons of old pics on the walls (like famous boxers, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, etc.), and some great old crusty bartenders. and the drinks were CHEAP. the weird thing was, my landlord at the time Leo LaRocca was a relative of the original owner...I think it was his uncle who originally opened it back in the day. When I found out it was being sold, I pleaded with him to buy it or stop the sale or SOMETHING! he said he didn't want to get involved! BOO!
Anyone else go there?

Re: I heart San Francisco
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 6:15 PMThe more bars I find with those MegaMaxx machines, the happier I become. I love 11 up!
Has anyone been to Kimo's? I heard it's a punk/rock/metal/etc bar upstairs, gay downstairs, and overall is a shithole. I really want to go. -
-
Re: I heart San Francisco
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 7:40 PMI went to a show at Kimo's one time a few years ago, if it's the same place I'm thinking of... it was rather cool as I may or may not recall :) -
-
Re: I heart San Francisco
Wed, May 24, 2006 - 9:41 PMyes, that's not a bad description of kimos...a shithole (but not a super cool one), gay downstairs (old polk gay before castro was the thing), rock etc upstairs (I guess it could be good up stairs, but not normally).
I live near there...you should check out Hemlock Tavern (free to get in, music for $3-7 in back room), Edinburgh Castle, and Big Foot Lodge. All better than Kimos. Also Red Devil Lounge can be good if you know what band is playing.
Have any other questions about the Polk Gulch??--runs through tenderloin, nob hill, and russian hill along the western borders. One of the most fun strips in SF.
Lemme know. -
-
Re: I heart San Francisco
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 3:41 PMhaha, well, then i might just stay away from kimo's since i already yelled at one of the bartenders. I couldn't help it (I was drunk), he said he hated the east coast. thumbs down.
I've seen a few bands @ Edinburgh, I like that place. Will check out Hemlock & Big Foot, thanks! -

Re: I heart San Francisco
