I LOVE the tenderloin dives...so many perfect ones.

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Tue, February 20, 2007 - 11:09 AMhm, i've been to zeitgeist (of course, i am german ;-) but i must say i didn't like it that much.
i'm sure it's great in the summer when you can sit outside to have a beer, but we went there on a cold saturday night, and i didn't like the feeling i had. also, the light is kind of bright inside, and it wasn't very cosy.
when we've been on the last tenderloin dive bar pub crawl, we went to the folloeing places:
1. Arrow
2. Aunt Charlies
3. 21 Club
4. Club Sixty Five
5. Lee-Onas
6. Brown Jug
7. Kum Bak
8. Jonell's
MY FAVORITE:
21 CLUB
what a cute little place, so unique, so small, so cozy.
right at the corner on one of the worst streets....
i talked to some guy who is going there for 15 years!!! and who calimed to have partied with janice joplin... you can read more about that dive and out tour here:
www.yelp.com/biz/gjVEw2NxGwfr1bh8ti8AHA
charley, do you know that??

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 1:25 AMAnke,
fun, fun, fun.
I've been to all of those dives, and of those I personally think either Aunt Charlie's or Lee-Ona's have the best charm. But from that group I've probably had the most fun, the most times, at Arrow.
Have you spent much time at the Ha-Ra? It's classic in so many ways...especially Carl the old curmudgeon of a bartender.
Also almost right next store is Whiskey Thieves. I love me some whiskey and I love me some whiskey thieves.
I live in the tendernob and have access by foot to all the tenderloin dives and the lower polk gulch ones. It's such a great part of town.
Pretty soon we'll have to plan a DIVE BAR CRAWL with peeps from this tribe and our friends beyond the tribe.
Can I guess you'd be interested in helping plan and carry out the crawl? -

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 1:28 AMAs far as Zeigeist goes, it basically only meant for sunny days outside.
The beauty is found on Saturday or Sunday mornings & afternoons -outside- when there is good weather. The best mix of people for just about anything. They also have one of *the* best Bloody Mary's in town.
You have to see it in its full scale to really appreciate the sheer beauty.
And don't forget the bar-b-que. Ask around, Zeitgeist is loved by just about everyone who has lived in the city for a long time. -

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 1:29 AMWho eles has some favorite dives in SF???
Let's get some traffic and conversation going in here.
Don't be shy!! -

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 8:32 AMI love the Budha Bar in China Town... as well as Li Po's. After they close down you can stumble over to Sam Wo's... the best dive chinese restaurant in SF. -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 8:40 AMi like the argus in bernal. it's a hole-in-the-wall literally, but stumbling distance. -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 9:53 AMspeaking of bernal: i'm not sure if it exactly qualifies as a true dive, but how's that Skip's Tavern? it looks like it has potential to be unpretentious fun, no?

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 3:21 PMI used to love the Nite-Cap though I haven't been there in eons. I took a great black and white photo of the sign (complete with a bright moon in the background!) years ago for a photo project....
The Expansion always has great colorful characters....
Love the Buddha and Li Po too!
I live in West Oak now...Merchant's is pretty dive-y, and there's several others in the West Oak/Jack London area that I haven't been to but want to. I'm dying to go to Esther's Orbit Room but I just need to round up someone to go with!

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 9:48 AMI have to agree that Aunt Charlie's is probably my favorite SF dive bar. (So much so that I wrote an ode of sorts to it on Yelp: www.yelp.com/user_details ]
And FYI: I think I posted in here about a month ago that Mr. Lee-Ona's is soon to be no more. Word is that it's been sold and will close around the end of March. So get your tragic boozin' in there while the gettin's good.
And as for Chinatown (almost North Beach, I guess too) dives, my beyond fav is The Bow Bow Cocktail Lounge. The proprietress, Candy Mama, is an absolute Rock Star!!

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 10:03 AMhey charley,
i just posted the agenda for the next official pub crawl. since this yelp girl is
planing it, why not expanding it to the tribe folks?
the bigger the group, the more fun it is, and the more we help local bussineses ;-)
of course i am willing to help whatever you plan, but regarding WHAT dives to go to,
i cannot give you much info.
the HA-RA, hm, no i think i haven't been inside that one yet, but it's on
the agenda of the 3/3 crawl....

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 8:40 AMI can't endorse Zeitgeist as a dive bar... I do think it's a great bar to go to, especially if you have a large group of friends. I've never been in a dive bar that had a large assortment of micro brews.... and ONLY micro brews. -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 7:38 PMThey also serve beers like PBR for I think $2.50, and last time I checked that's not a micor brew :)
and no can argue with it's run down appearance, but it does walk the line.
but yes, the debates on what constitutes a dive will rage on, and on...and there's nothing wrong with that!
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Sat, February 24, 2007 - 10:42 AMuh huh. as much as i love zeitgiest too, i would not qualify it as a genuine 'dive bar' either. grungy, yes. but, checklist for why it is not:
where's the truly tragic regular clientele (who practically hiss should daylight peak in from the opened entrance), the crusty, grizzled middle-aged veteran bartender, the fabulously dated decor, the air of a genuine argument erupting, a dissolute crying jag from some lonely soul in the corner, or impromptu monologue reminiscence, or sudden protestations of immediate life-long friendship from the random chatterbox sitting next to you? i could go on (obviously. sorry.)
so, i'm belaboring a point you already get. zeitgeist has a very specific attitude and attendant clientele = arguably pretentious in its 'unpretentiousness' . (this isn't meant to start a flame war; you know what i mean.) it's a dynamite place, and i'm glad it existence. it's just not a gen-u-ine dive bar. -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Sat, February 24, 2007 - 10:47 AMexistence = should be 'exists' obviously. and equally obvious are my romanticized, arguably condescending notions of what a dive bar is. (and hell, i'm sober right now. be glad you're not within earshot once i'm all liquored up!)

Wed, February 21, 2007 - 10:28 AMWhen I lived in SF I was a frequent flyer at the Silver Spur in the Sunset.
No taps, no tables, and 50 cent pool at the time.
My, I miss that place.

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 4:04 PMel rio (your dive)...i have a very old, old coaster from there, which has their logo on it
eagle's drift in lounge south of market (not to be confused with the other eagle's bar)
500 club
naps (next to el rio)
expansion
the hyde out
-
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 1:07 PMI used to love Nap's, they would let us bring our own food and cook it on their grill, etc, but they started getting unhappy about certain patio-related activities...
speaking of eagles and patios, the Eagle Tavern has what is perhaps my favorite patio on all of SF.. not sure if they are considered a dive, though (?)

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 8:42 PMPops is WAY too hipster IMO. I think you have to be under 28 to get in anyway.
I work about 200 feet from Eagle Drift-In and I FINALLY went in there a few months ago. Love it! and if you go right after work (5pm) you can SMOKE! -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Mon, March 12, 2007 - 12:24 PMeagle drift in (or, as i prefer, evil drift in) is my favorite stop on the way to the ballpark. haven't been there since september, but i'll be stopping by again soon. is jane still the bartender? she rocks. -

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Mon, March 12, 2007 - 12:34 PMi have not been since maggie..... -

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, April 18, 2007 - 9:00 PMI am very very sad to report that the Eagles Drift is CLOSED. The owner sold it about a month ago and while Tiffany and Lisa ran the place with a last gasp of excellence for the past few weeks, they finally ran out of liquor and beer and they closed the doors. That was OUR BAR man... I would have drank midori if it came to that. Alas, it is no more. No one knows what the new owner is going to do with it, but it will probably get turned into a fern bar, sadly.
To try and turn fate, I ask that when you raise a glass at your favorite hell-holte tonight, raise one for the Eagle and that their carpeting remain that offensive orange tint, their 60's deco false ceiling remain dusty, and their smoking rules as lax as their bartenders are charming. -

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Thu, April 19, 2007 - 12:45 AMRIP eagles drift. You had a good life, and you will be missed.
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Thu, April 19, 2007 - 7:31 AMno effin' way!?!? i work around the corner from there and walk by most days after 5:00. i was wondering why it was shuttered up every so often more frequently (especially on mondays). god#$@it. if it gets turned into yet another swanky exposed brick tech worker bar, that will force my sorrowful binge drinking up several further notches. what a shame. -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Thu, April 19, 2007 - 12:14 PMdamn I work right around the corner too, on 3rd and Bryant. I only went there a couple times but it was nice to know it was there. Damn it! Yahoo just moved into my bldg, it prob will turn into a techy worker bar :( -

Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Fri, May 4, 2007 - 9:55 AMI used to like the Uptown on 17th & Shotwell--a pretty divey address, if nothing else. And although I'm not sure it qualifies as a dive, I like the Philosopher's Club in West Portal. Is it still there? -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Fri, May 4, 2007 - 10:08 AMyeah, i love the Uptown too. very neighborhoody, 'lived in' and unpretentious, if not an outright sketchy dive.
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Tue, May 8, 2007 - 11:00 AM<< I like the Philosopher's Club in West Portal. Is it still there? >>
ahhhhhhhhh, the Philly Club as we used to call it....the sign is still there, but the old dive bar smell is gone, a few young (cute) preppy boys bought it a few years back, and it is now called the portal Station, or something like it...
used to be a bunch of fun in that bar..... -
-
Re: new Poll: Best SF dive?
Wed, May 9, 2007 - 10:29 AMI know it isn't at 3rd & Bryant, but there is another Eagle's Drift In in the sunset... Noriega right off 19th Avenue. Between 19th and 20th. -
