Re: dive bar in DC
Wed, March 17, 2004 - 9:29 AMHey thanks for the tip! Here's what the Post ez about it:
There are eight mounted deer heads on the walls of the tiny Tune Inn -- and, more important, two mounted deer butts. The butts are a lot more emblematic of this raucous neighborhood joint. The most popular thing on the menu is the pitcher of beer, just $5.50 (as long as you order Busch, not any of that yuppie stuff). During the day, the place specializes in workingman breakfasts and quick lunches. At night, if you feel like eating, the straightforward and cheap cheeseburger is the house specialty. Push through the loud throngs that mob the front of the place on weekend evenings and you may find a relatively peaceful booth in the back. An historical note: This is where James Carville and Mary Matalin went on their first date. They left quickly.
I'll check it out!

Tune Inn
331-1/2 Pennsylvania Ave. SE • Washington, DC • 202-543-2725
(I Googled "Tune Inn DC" figuring the "Inn" was the most likely spelling, being a pun and all.)

Re: dive bar in DC
Mon, April 12, 2004 - 6:14 AMI was at a place called The Raven, it is in Adams Morgon. A tiny hole I called home for an evening. There is also Common Share, and Angles both are in Adams Morgon. I'm sorry but don't have any other info than that. -

gotcha covered
Sun, April 18, 2004 - 12:53 AMThe Raven fits the bill. As does Cosmos (above Chief Ikes on Columbia near Harvard St.-sometimes only open on weekends), Asylum (at Columbia & 18th), Trios however is the king of the DC dives IMHO. (aka the fox and hounds-go to the bar inside-not the restaurant of same name on the corner) Its on 17th near Q I think? Common Share and Angles both fit the bill too. Velvet lounge and DC9 are also cool, though more hipster/rocker than divey. So yeah, that's 18th street/Columbia Hieghts/U street. In Va there's a load of options as well. Capital Hill has a few gems too. Dunno about the rest of DC. Anyone else drink someplace besides Northwest?

Re: dive bar in DC
Tue, December 28, 2004 - 3:43 PMJust wanted to dredge up this olde post.
How about the Grog and Tankard on Wisconsin just north of Georgetown. Great bar for rock and roll and cheap beer, or it was when I left DC a couple years ago.
Also, there's another place on way upper Wisconsin north of Tenleytown on the right if you're heading toward the MD line.
Its in the basement of a restaurant. Holy Fuck to they pour strong drinks. Basically, they'll fill your glass 3 quarters with liquor and give you an unopened can of soda. It kills me that I can't remember the name of it.
It is NOT a "dive bar" like Asylum or Common Share where people go because it is a dive bar, although I dearly love the Common Share. This place is just an odd little place where odd people go to zobified anonymously.
Anyone know where I'm talking about? Grrr.... -
