Advice on organizing a pub crawl?

I'm planning a pub crawl in SF next month and I've never done this before so I'm looking for some advice from folks who have. I need help trying to figure out a route/bars to stop in. Also, do you make arrangements with the places you plan to stop or just show up? Etc, Etc.
