Sadly, I missed lovely Cat's visit to the Windy City but surely there are some local Chicago dive bar lovers around, aren't there?

I'm getting bored and need some new drinking buddies!!!!

I'm back in October and could run a tour on Irving Park alone...

    Maybe July too, I'll holler.

An interesting start would be the Old Irving Park Tap or <some guy's name> unforgetable's.

So sad, nobody in Chicago wants to come play with me.

Ikasaurus, let me know when you are going to be here, we'll have a drink!

Hey, I went out with you in SF, why not come to Chicago?

It's about 90, humid and gross. Perfect weather for slinking into a dark bar.

i'll be there tomorrow, visiting from san francisco. what are the best dive bars to hit? going to see the cubs, so anything around wrigley would be appreciated. also going to the art institute.

First, this would go back to how you personally define a "dive" bar, but these are some of the places I like to hang out.

Most anything around Wrigley is going to be overrun with Trixies (think Marina district sorority girls only with less variety and more bottle blond absolute clones). But I do like the L&L Tavern (featured in the DBC photo album) which is on Clark and Belmont, just south of the park. On the weekends it is something of a hipster place but on weeknights it’s cool. Townhall Pub on Halsted is a dumpy little place, but I like it there too.

Otherwise, if you are willing to wander around town a bit, the Wicker Park/Bucktown areas can deliver. Beachwood Inn, Zakopane, Pontiac Café, Gold Star and Club Foot are some of my favorites though the music at Foot can get a little bit loud.

www.centerstage.net lists bars by neighborhood and by classification (including dive, though I’m not so clear on their definition of a dive). Luckily, in Chicago you can trip on the sidewalk and land in a bar.

the l&l couldn't be beat. we went there before and after the game. thanks for the tip.

but we ended up every night at the sea of happiness, the bar in the cass hotel on wabash. if a hotel bar can qualify as a dive, then sea of happiness qualifies. lovely decor, reasonable prices, and the clientele likes to watch t.v. while they drink.

friday night the bartendress asked us if we'd be back saturday, 'because we're running out of old style.'

Brazen speaks the truth...wrigleyville is thin on dive bars. I can recommend "Korean Bar" a block or two south of wrigley just off Clark.

Whilst at the art institute walk a couple blocks north to Washington. It's kind of a restaurant, but breaks down into a dive bar circa 4pm. South side of the street, just west of Michigan ave.

I moved from Chicago about 12 years ago and havent been back. I'm curious, is Danny's still around? It was one of my fav dives back in the day.

If you mean Danny's in Bucktown, it's there but very hipster and loungy. I don't care for it personally, during the week it may be tolerable but on the weekends the have dj's and it's all just a bit too trendy in that "we aren't "trendy", we're just cooler than you" sort of way.

Not yet I'm afraid, this working thing is getting out of hand and it has seriously cut into my boozing time. But it is on my list! I did recently enjoy a stop at the Ravenswood Pub though, not too far from my house and a bit like drinking in the rec room with all the old uncles I never had.

I just realized what a spaz I am. The bf's dad was here to visit a couple of weekends ago, he stayed at the Cass and though we never had time to stop in for a drink it never even clicked in my head that it was the Sea of Happiness.

Just a heads up on the trip. I'm there 9/30 - 10/16, but have a couple side trips planned (including 10/10 and 10/11 in Madison). I'll hit you up with a note before I leave Brazen.

      cheers,

Again, with the work thing, my schedule is ridiculous (apart from La Day Job, I waitress at the Vic theatre during shows and we've got a lot coming up in October, sigh, I'm already tired out) but let me know what's up, you can buy me a birthday drink!

Maybe we'll hit the vic if there's anything interesting...I'll check a reader when I get into town.

Bravo for October bdays, mine is the 4th.

Rock on Libra! Mine is the 8th.

I don't know if anything coming up is "interesting" (tonights show is because none of us even know who is playing but for unknown reasons security is super tight) but on non concert nights we always have Brew & View, which may be the finest variation of a dive bar in all the land, full bar and second run movies in what was once a grand old theatre but is now held together with duct tape.

            Man, I love that place.

So what was the suprise show? Enquiring ikasauruses wanna know.

Sorry I missed you on the midwest tour. Next time through for sure.

Only had time for one dive bar during my trip (friends/family/New Monsoon @ Martyrs/tributasaurus @the park West/side trips to WI and IN). It was called oakwood or oakstown...something like that in Ravenswood. An interesting little dive that was a local diner with a bar in a previous life (or maybe still during the day). A nice feature is that it's a 4am bar and host the worst piano in captivity.

Hope your annual birth anniversery was a good one.

That's funny, I live in Ravenswood and when I worked at a bar in the area we used to go to the Oakwood once we closed all the time. Of course, it was always pounding back WAY too many drinks, too fast and often ended up with dancing on the tables, passing out under them or fighting around them, but hey, good times!

Next time, if you are in the same general area, go to Foleys on Irving Park and Wolcott. The bar is probably the size of your living room but as long as Seth is bartending, it's good fun, until Mr. Microphone comes out.

Spent Saturday night at Zakopane, one of my favorite Wicker Park bars on Division. We only meant to go in for 1 or 2 but got in talking to an old vet who lived upstairs and ended up staying all night.
