Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 2:25 PMI don't think it's dying... but it is possible that it's being redefined. I still think of a dive as a place where I go to get drunk... not to socialize. I do have some local dives that I've become quite fond of and take friends there... but to get drunk, not for the entertainment. The hipsters aren't on to us yet... -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:21 PMentertainment? you mean there are bars that have entertainment OTHER than drinking? lol where are these bars? even the scenester faves up here are for drinking only...
okay, yeah, jukebox and pool table, i guess that's entertainment
and the bars that have live music, but up in these parts a good deal of those bars could legitimately be called dives! -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:24 PMa lot of the time the drunks ARE the entertainment. ;)

Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:45 PMif it's a real dive they will have karaoke -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:48 PMmy favorite dive in San Jose has karaoke on Friday nights. You get to sing a lot.. and the karaoke guy is a horrible singer. He looks like Chuck Norris on heroin... -

Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:53 PMAre you fucking shittin' me??!! Karaoke??!! YOu obviously have no clue as to what a dive is, shadow!! A REAL dive is full of mostly old fuckers who would throw a rocks glass at ya if you tried that karaoke shit in their bar!! Not to say that I don't enjoy a bit of karaoke now and then myself, 'specially if'n I'm shitfaced.
In LA, just head downtown towards Skid Row for a real dive. See if that karaoke shit'll fly down there! -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:57 PMI've been to dives that are nothing but old fucks and they are so old and drunk, they don't even realize karaoke is going on they think it's the juke box they pay no mind, and no one is really singing karaoke except maybe the crockity old host and a coupl eof really drunk barflies singin some old patsy cline or something -

Re: Is the dive dying?

Re: Is the dive dying?
Sat, March 26, 2005 - 6:46 PM> Ever been to Bob's Frolic Room on hollywood blvd though? That place cracks me up. <
The Frolic Room used to be a dive bar, until people like us took it over and wore it like a designer suit.
One of the best dives in LA used to be the old Firefly (not the new poncy one in the Valley). The entertainment consisted almost solely of the bartender occasionally setting himself on fire.

Re: Is the dive dying?
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 2:28 PMI agree with Shadow, we had a real humdinger of a Dive Bar in Vancouver that was a kereokee lounge, and trust me it met all the specifications:
- nasty old furniture and carpet
- nasty old men
- cheap drinks
- Keno
Infact it was such a dive it was shut down for being unsafe !!! -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 2:43 PMOH YEAH!!!! Let's not forget the Keno for fucksake, hell I find myself even diving into that one while at my favorite dive bar, which is in a bowling alley I might add!!!

Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 4:36 PMi go to dives either to be secluded and observe, get drunk or just have quiet time with me and my booze. heh.
there's possible entertainment anywhere you go....be it the bottom of your glass or somebody's cute ass. -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 5:07 PMlol jessica you rule!
however, if it's a real dive it WILL have karaoke!?!?!? uh, sorry no...
it can be a real dive and still have karaoke, but not having karaoke in no way precludes a bar from being a dive....
in fact, if they have karaoke, they have to work a little harder to achieve their dive stripes....
sort of the opposite of what you said actually
real dive CAN have karaoke
not, a real dive MUST have karaoke -

Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 5:15 PMIf you came to my dive that DOES have karaoke on Fridays I gaurantee you will not stumble away from there thinking it's not a dive. ;) -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 5:27 PMhey i said that
a dive CAN have karoake, one of mine does... but it doesn't make it more a real dive if it has karaoke, in fact, it makes the challenge greater to prove it is, in fact, a dive
my disagreement was with the statement "if its a REAL dive they will have karaoke" that's not even CLOSE to being true.... some real dives have karaoke, many real dives do not...
long short... there were dives LONG before there was karaoke and there will be dives long after karaoke.... -
-
Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 5:41 PMI'm sorry, I wasn't trying to counter your statement... I was just trying to state there is no mistaking the divyness of my dive bar. :D -

Wed, March 23, 2005 - 9:03 PMI am definitely looking forward to a Lord J dive bar tour, or perhaps just a single dive bar night! As much as I'd love to soak up lots of them, my fave way to experience the dive is to get there early and leave there late soaking up everything along the way! -

Re: Is the dive dying?
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 10:30 PM:D Sorry I'm not going to be able to hook up with you guys this weekend. I didn't realize the bunny jam was at the Underworld house... Are you guys going to Zeitgeist on Friday? -

Re: Is the dive dying?
Tue, March 29, 2005 - 11:07 AMoh yes, i know ben texas... but he doesn't tend bar there anymore... he works there, but mostly walking around, working the crowd, occassionally djing... ya know, managing type stuff
it is one of my trifecta of bars and i tend to get a discount there...
though a dive it ain't they SO want to be a dive, they advertise as a "dive" on Citysearch... but much as i love it, and I do... it's NOT a dive! far far far too new and far too brightly lit, far too much rotating art work (as in actual art, they rotate things in an out for a month at a time)... live dj every night... too much brand new formica.... far too many types of whiskey
its a great bar, but its simply not a dive.... they can wish it as much as they like, but wishing won't make it so
my only other quibble is the unfortunate decision to go with the spelling WHISKY over the FAR superior spelling of WHISKEY
damn shame, that...

Re: Is the dive dying?
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 8:20 AMThe first thing I did when I moved here was seek out a dive bar to not only make my own, but to work in. It's the only way, I figure. Make money and get free drinks in a beloved true dive. Ours has Karaoke on some nights, it's true. It also has giant underpants hanging from the ceiling. I think it's the combination of the two, with it's bar stench and amazingly bad jukebox selection and barfly clientele that made me feel at home. I love the bad karaoke. Bring it on!

no, the dive is not dying, come to santa cruz and i'll show u around.
there are some skank-ass places here, and i love many of them.
there have been some ebbs and flows in some of them, but the wanna-be's and posers never stick around for long. -

Re: Is the dive dying?
Tue, March 29, 2005 - 4:40 PMrev., lol yes, he's great!
and i'm not blaming him for the totally wrong spelling of whiskey (yes i know its technically also correct to spell it whisky, but it's just ya know WRONG!) or the push to try and get people to believe its a dive... those decisions probably came from somewhere else, i'm sure
but, ya gotta love the ben texas... ben rocks!
and so does the whisky bar... vive le whisky!
a dive it is NOT, but a great bar it is...
got a good friend that bartends there...

Re: Is the dive dying?
Mon, September 26, 2005 - 8:09 AMPISH-TOSH! there's no WAY the dive is dying, girl...just look around you. they're EVERYWHERE.
i have to say, though....the best dives i've ever been to are in the northwest. portland and seattle are home to some of the coolest dives i've ever been to. seattle especially--the old admiral benbow inn (R.I.P) and the sloop, the viking, ileens, (R.I.P.) the five point, the cloud room (okay, so maybe it's not a dive but the atmosphere is awesome) sorry charlie's (R.I.P.).....
okay, so maybe a lot of 'em are closing. there are still tons of fun dives up there. like the roadhouse.....
