Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Wed, April 5, 2006 - 10:59 AMWell mine in LA was The Blarney Cove, I knew the Bartender's who were also the owners. All the regulars knew eachother very well, and we tend to do stuff outside the bar together. I could've walked there but too lazy.
My new one in the area of which I now live (Lake Merritt) all though I have not been in a while and may have to go tonight is Smitty's! They have a shuffle board, which I think is awesome! I don't know any of the bartenders or regulars yet as I have been out of town for a long time, but it is time to get to know them! I could walk but again, I am lazy!

Wed, April 5, 2006 - 11:52 AMMy favorite dive is The Saloon, on upper Grant in SF.
Good Music & it smells like a good dive.

Mon, April 10, 2006 - 5:56 PMKnob Creek! Representin' the 100 proof!
I'm a Turkey man, myself, but I've got respect for all 100 Burbons. Not that I'm cultured about the why's and what's about 'em, just 100's a better number, and it gets ya frunk quicker. -

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 10:59 AMSam, Have you tried Eagle Rare?
They do not serve Eagle at my favorite dive. I get it at Bev-Mo.
Smoother then Turkey or Knob, for about the same price......

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 11:18 PMWhen I lived in SF, it was The Silver Spur out in the Sunset, 20th and Irving. For some reason I was possessed of orange Stoli and cranberry juice at the time. It was the only bar in my neighborhood, and the city, that still had 50 cent pool. Also a fan of Zeitgeist for the spicy Sunday bloody mary and Ween on the jukebox.
Seattle has the ever-popular and grease-sodden Jade Pagoda. The now-defunct, and ever-sketchy Art Bar was always fun. As was the Twilight, although they only moved down the street.
Here in Philly, as far as neighborhood bars goes--I don't drive, and a dive isn't a dive if you can't get there by foot--Doobie's is the place for me. Only drawback: they only take cash. A real bane for a broke drunk like me.

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Tue, April 11, 2006 - 3:03 PMZeitgeist is definitely a fave, and fortunately within stumbling-distance from home. Aside from the patchouli nazis, you can get away with damned near anything there.
I love the decor, music, etc, of Lucky 13... if not for their puritan patio hours, they'd be among the best! And as favourite bar-tenders go, it's hard to beat L13 on a Tuesday..
There is a little dive next-door to me called Yong San Lounge which is really friendly, they even let people smoke inside :)
the list goes on, though I may have to stretch the definition of 'dive'

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 10:54 AMMy fav is the Buccaneer in Sierra Madre (Pasadena area)
i used to go to this bar almost every night when i first turned 21, but then i moved to SF
i only go to the "Bucc" about 4 or 5 times a year now,
but Mike one of the bartenders still knows what drink to pour me when i walk in -

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 11:01 AMoh i forgot the best part, its a pirate bar!!
darkly lit with murals of pirates and wenchs on the walls,
and all the bartenders pour hella stiff drinks
its located in Sierra Madre which is this little hick town in LA
its 2 square miles, no traffic lights, and the speed limit is 30 everywhere except in the hills where its 15
so you get this mountain town vibe but your in LA -

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 2:01 PMHello everyone...
I'm up here in the Seattle tribe and wrote this thread.
see-attle.tribe.net/thread/d...754f1bc85
Then I saw that someone(LORD J) came up with this great tribe! LOL
Man, there is a tribe for just about everything...
OK, my local "dive bar" was back in NYC. Like most of the good ones back in NYC it was IRISH! It was run by a man called Peter who also served up behind the bar and had a wicket sense of humor. The locals were many. Marge(not making this up) was a large woman with few front teeth. (Lost them in a bar fight I think) She was the bars matriarch. If she did not like you, you best go find another watering hole.
The other locals where, Jimmy, a local criminal and thief(don't leave anything on the bar and walk away)...Little John, who is a biker around 6'8, 300lbs or so with a great laughter...and Billy, the guy that just has "no life". His wife died a few years ago so the bar is now is family and his life. I was the NEW kidd in town. I moved in across the street and from day one I had to check out my local bar. A move that I would not regret. Those guys because my second family.
They day I left, I packed up the van with all of my crap and walked in with my brother for one last round. Five hours later, we were too "shitfaced" to drive and had to push the move back another day. It was all Peter's idea to keep me around for just one more day. All the locals were there for my move. Some had helped me load the van. I went in for one last time and everyone I knew had to buy me a beer and every made a toast. It was so hard to get away from that. These guys were great people. We laughted, we cried, we got drunk together for the three years I lived there. Fuck "Cheers". This was real! These people lived a hard life. I have enough stories to write 2 novels. I will miss them and I hope I find a new "dive bar" here in Seattle. My new home.

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Tue, April 25, 2006 - 3:42 AMSF has so many great dives to choose from. Me likely go out.
every knows Zeitgeist is one of the best. I've done just about everything there.
I have a sick soft spot for Delerium on 16th st. $2 tecate cans all the time. I've done dirty things in the back more than once.
R bar in the tendernob on sutter at polk st is fun for a really mixed style (often no good style at all, or just average) group of people that like to get fucked up and then go have one night stands. Come on, you've been there...or at least wanted to if you have no game. But it's not really a dive, but it's also not nice in any way. Great men's urinal stall.
Hemlock is kind of a dive. I love peanut shells on the floor and you never have to pay to hear the music in the back if you don't want to. People at hemlock love to dish out attitude...just give 'em the double flip off with a big smile; they'll feel ya. Or just go around the corner to Edinburgh Castle on geary at polk where there's no attitude.
I used to be my favorite bartender, but I gave it up to be a scientist after college, unless you count the bar at my house.
Oh, and I love to drink and party at the Anon Gallery for almost any party there especially the anonsalon parties...even though it's not a dive, it's not even a 'bar' something just feels divey about ordering illegal drinks all night long. I guess it could be considered a cross between a "tin can," a underground club, and a theme camp on 2 or 10 o'clock streets on the playa.

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Thu, May 4, 2006 - 1:40 PMThanks, Long Island here, I feel welcomed. I have a wonderful popular dive here that I frequent, Whoville Bar and Grill. Great food, Great music on the juke, bands on the weekend, 95% of the time no cover, 100% for me. Nice and quiet on sunday. My bartender is Sir Flip, quiet gentleman, never leaves a glass empty, great with the buybacks, never misses a hand signal, nod or eye contact. And the best part Dr Suess paraphinelliaI as far as the eye can see plus an annual showing of How the Grinch stole Christmas with shots everytime who or whoville is spoken in the program. There are other dives in my area but this one is the place I call second home. -

Sat, May 27, 2006 - 12:38 PMHaving recently moved, I have yet to find a 'dive' in my new town. I've been spending some time at the Tavern on Main in El Segundo (a nice little sports bar...*gasp*) but used to stumble aroung Knuckleheads in San Clemente. The Red Fox also had a certain Bukowskiesque charm... -

Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 11:34 AMI am a newbie here, although I feel right at home.
I also love the r bar in sf, and have a soft spot for the Red Room on Sutter, although it isn't really a dive. It's closing soon, so go while you still can. I also like Aces.
At home (Santa Cruz) the 007 Club on Soquel is great, and the Rush Inn downtown by the town clock is not to be missed, but the absolute all time, if-you-can-only-hit-one-dive-before-you-die in SC is Brady's Yacht Club on Seabright. The best of the worst! Nicotine stains on the walls, duct tape on the stools, slope-y pool table, cranky bartenders (no not colorful--CRANKY!), and vaya con dios to you if you use the bathroom.
Make mine a Maker's neat, with a PBR back (yep that's what I said) and don't be a stranger... -
-
Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 12:14 PMInteresting... I think I've seen Brady's Yacht Club on Seabright. I was looking for that brewery that is just off of Seabright. I would have gone in if I hadn't been meeting someone for dinner. I may just venture there some day... just don't like driving highway 17 after a beer and a shot or two... or three... or... -
-
Re: Welcome New Members and Old!!!
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 1:47 PMYou're thinking of Seabright Brewrey. Brady's just a block down closer to the ocean, on the same side of the street.
Understandable about the drive following the shots...too risky.
A former great dive just one block in the other direction on Seabright was the 529 Club. It's been taken over and semi-yuppified by some club owner from San Jose looking to turn a buck. What a loss...
